The Transport Workers’ Union welcomes Sydney Ports’ announcement on their commitment today to deliver facilities for truck drivers at Port Botany.
“Today’s announcement is a victory for our members, who have fought long and hard for basic facilities for working people at the port,” TWU State Secretary Wayne Forno said.

“I congratulate our members for the long fight they have put up to make this happen. Sydney Ports have acted on their concerns and we commend this.”

Truck drivers at Port Botany have been fighting for facilities as basic as toilets for a number of years, after being left with only two portaloos which have been provided by Sydney Ports after the stevedores refused to provide ongoing funding for them. This is insufficient to service over 150 drivers.

“I also welcome the fact that Sydney Ports has consulted with the TWU on issues which have resulted in important outcomes for our members, such as paid waiting time for truck operators at the Port which came into effect on 28 February as part of the PBLIS scheme,” Mr Forno added.

Sydney Ports have made commitments to deliver the following for truck drivers at Port Botany:

Sydney Ports has agreed to increase the number of toilet facilities on Simblist Road. Additional temporary toilet facilities will be delivered to Simblist Road by Friday 25 March 2011.

Sydney Ports has also committed to providing a Truck Marshalling Area (TMA), which they have agreed will include:

•    Male and Female Toilets
•    Hot and cold water
•    Seats and tables
•    Shade

For provision of food and beverages, Sydney Ports will work to identify a mobile third party commercial caterer to provide these onsite.

Sydney Ports are now completing engineering and feasibility works on a preferred TMA site in the Port precinct which they hope to have up and running by November 2011.

The planned time restrictions state that the TMA can be accessed no more than 1 hour ahead of schedule, however Sydney Ports has agreed to examine flexibility for country carriers.

Mr Forno added that,

“The TWU look forward to consultation with Sydney Ports on country carriers being given flexibility on time limits for accessing the TMA: bearing in mind the drive for Safe Rates and the importance of taking all measures to limit fatigue in long distance drivers on our roads.

“We will be monitoring progress on these commitments on behalf of our members, and we look forward to seeing them fulfilled and the new facilities in place,” Mr Forno concluded.
