When Clover Moore changed waste services contractors for City of Sydney this year, local waste workers lost their jobs and were told by Clover’s new contractor URM to reapply for them at around $200 per week less.
$200 is a lot for these workers to lose, with families to support and bills to pay, living in Sydney, one of the world’s most expensive cities.
"I’ve got two kids to support. This is hard work and we deserve fair pay for it. I nearly chopped my finger off when I jammed it in between a skip bin and a wall.
You’re picking up rubbish which could have anything, even syringes in it - you could easily jab yourself. You can do your back in any time. I’ve lifted around 80 kilos worth of weight."

"There’s no way you can take a $200 pay cut. Is your interest rate going down too? Your rent? Your electricity bill? No way. How can you justify a pay cut when everything else is going up?"
John Robinson, waste worker
