Taxi drivers on the Central Coast welcomed news that delegates have decided the absence of a clear framework outlining the rights and remedies available to drivers, was one of the biggest issues facing workers in the industry. While Sydney drivers have coverage under an award, drivers outside Metropolitan areas have very limited protection and are not aware of their dispute resolution rights.
Central Coast cabbie Greg Lynch welcomed the announcement, saying “it’s time something was done to put drivers in regional and rural NSW on a similar footing to Sydney drivers. There has been a disadvantage for too long.” Driver’s delegate, Anthony Deal, said he was grateful taxi drivers and TWU officials were giving support to what has previously been a weak link in cab drivers rights and conditions.
The TWU is dedicated to lifting the standards for cab drivers across the state and much work needs to be done to ensure drivers, no matter where they work, have the ability to earn a decent wage, do their job safely and have enough time to spend with family and friends.
