Operational Pilot of Electronic Work Diaries
As part of the RTA Road Toll Response Package, $5 million in funding has
been allocated for a three year period (2010-2013) for the Operational
Pilot of Electronic Work Diaries.
The RTA is leading the Pilot, which also involves the Australian Government, road and police agencies from other states and territories, the National Transport Commission and Transport Certification Australia.
Written work diaries have been in use in their current form since 2008, but Electronic Work Diaries (EWDs) have not been approved for use in NSW or any other Australian state, as specifications and approval processes have not been developed.
Stage 1 of the Pilot, launched on 25 July 2011, includes 27 heavy vehicle drivers and about 20 enforcement officers in New South Wales and Victoria.
Stage 2 will start next year, and will involve a larger number of heavy vehicle drivers, transport operators and enforcement officers across participating jurisdictions.
The Pilot is an opportunity for transport operators, heavy vehicle drivers and system suppliers to test out the national policy and technical specifications for the approval of electronic systems. This will help develop a safe and efficient solution for industry and authorities.
