The NSW Government has announced a plan to slash key areas of the workers compensation scheme. If these changes go ahead, they will greatly limit the ability of workers injured on the job to access their entitlements.
NSW Government has eyes set on your compensation entitlements
Listen to Assistant State Secretary Richard Olsen discuss how the NSW Government changes to the compensation scheme will directly affect you.
The proposed changes are:
1. Capping of entitlements after two and a half years: Regardless of the severity of your injury, a worker will not receive a single payment or be able to claim medical expenses after two and a half years.
2. Reduction in entitlements: The Government will reduce the weekly income of an injured worker after 13 weeks. Currently weekly income is reduced after 26 weeks.
3. Make it harder to claim: Negligence against an employer will be harder to prove in some cases, meaning workers will not be entitled to any compensation following certain work place accidents.
4. Removal of entitlements: A worker under the new changes will not be entitled to payments for pain and suffering or receive compensation for injuries sustained while travelling to and from work.
The Government will also cut payments to the partners of workers who have died as the result of a work injury, hitting back at the most vulnerable during a delicate time.
If this law passes and you’re injured, the changes will affect you and your loved ones. This is a price too big to pay. That’s why the TWU and Unions NSW will be taking up the fight against the changes and we will keep you updated on our progress.
