A week ago, Lion Nathan National Foods called its Wetherill Park plant employees to a meeting. Management then announced that the plant would shut, with 232 jobs lost.
Members and Organiser Peter Lane did a live cross on Channel 7 news that night, expressing their frustration at management’s harsh and unnecessary action.
The TWU’s viewpoint received state-wide airplay on commercial radio and the ABC and a big story in The Sydney Morning Herald.

We have commenced negotiations on the redundancy and retraining package.
“We won’t rest till our members receive every last cent of their entitlements, and can move on in this difficult labour market with the degree of confidence we think is required to mitigate the terrible hardship they have been put under,” Peter said.

On top of the above negotiations, the union will apply pressure on Lion Nathan National Foods’ parent company, Kirin Holdings, through our links with Unyu Roren, (the All-Japan Federation of Transport Workers’ Unions).

If you read the coverage below, I think you will agree that Geoff Lynch’s comments display both a lack of sensitivity and a disregard for reality. Losing your job and having to find a new one in tough economic times is a situation that requires much more attention then a couple of throw-away lines.

Whether Arthur Murphy is genuine in saying, “Our people are our primary concern right now ...” remains to be seen.

I stress again: the TWU will negotiate vigorously on behalf of its members to produce a fair outcome, and not settle for what suits management's bottom line.
