We are a week out from our Safe Rates Convoy to Canberra on Sunday, June 20. It’s our biggest event of 2010. What are we fighting for? In late 2008, the Federal Government released the independent Quinlan Report, which found a direct link between rates of pay and road safety in the transport industry. Since then, hundreds of people have died in heavy-vehicle accidents.

Around 150 Western Sydney truck drivers are leading the convoy to Canberra and have spoken out in support of Safe Rates, urging the Western Sydney community to get behind the cause.

A Newcastle press conference will take place on Wednesday 21 April, to launch a massive truck convoy to Canberra for Safe Rates and remember the 287 people who died in truck related crashes last year in the leadup to International Workers Memorial Day, held annually to raise awareness of and prevent workplace deaths.
